Cecil Taylor at Lincoln Center Jazz

"The piano is many, many things and one of the things is a drum with 88 notes," says Cecil Taylor in this article published in the February 13th edition of Playbill. Taylor is bringing his band to Jazz at Lincoln Center on March 9 and 10, a radical move for an organization not known for showcasing challenging improvised music.

Scheduled to appear with Taylor's band is John Zorn's fabulous Masada, but my bet is that Cecil Taylor is going to steal the show. I bought tickets about two weeks ago. If you want to see what promises to be a phenomenal night of original music, be prepared to plunk down at least $50 each. It's gonna be worth it.

The Work of a Subversive Graphic Designer?

Like many read William Burroughs as a teenager, I have a healthy obsession with the number 23, a number which seems to reoccur in history and popular culture. Skeptics say that its seeming frequency is due to that fact that we are looking for it, pick any other number and you'll see it pop up in the newspaper with shocking regularity. But those of us in the know have experimented, observed, and tested...and there certainly seems to be something to it. But this post isn't about that, it's about the upcoming movie 23 with Jim Carrey.

Take a look at the selection from the movie poster. Do you see what I see? Maybe it's like the number itself and I am imagining something that really isn't there, but that little alphabetic squiggle just above Carrey's left eyebrow certainly looks suspicious. Somewhere, a graphic designer might be smirking at his juvenile prank...or maybe I can only see it because I'm looking for it.

The Pool Effect

We try to swim together as often as we can. Even though we live in Brooklyn, we go to a YMCA in Manhattan. Although sometimes I don't really feel like going, I always love it once we're done. This video will serve to remind me of this fact.
